Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement

Many people are unaware that, without written consent of the author, printing, photocopying, cutting, copying and pasting, duplication or transmission of written internet material is against the law.

A WORD ABOUT THIS WEB SITE
The linked and written materials in this web site are protected under copyright law.  Written materials on this site are the sole property of K. Bruce Harpster.  The linked materials belong to someone else.

Copyright infringement and plagiarism hurts authors financially, intellectually and emotionally.  New technologies are available for publishers, authors and teachers to detect copyright law violations and plagiarism.  Therefore, it's easier than ever to get caught stealing someone else's ideas.

To avoid copyright infringement, visitors should contact me or the owners of the properties linked for permission to reprint.  Authors will often grant permission if emailed a sincere request and an explanation of use for academic or reprinting purposes.

To avoid plagiarism, students should cite the source and/or provide a link with the name of the author, either in an academic paper or on a website.  Citation formats can be found in most writing or publishing manuals.

Here is an example of a website-link format:

"Readers should visit Caroline Bowen's web page on plagiarism entitled "Copy-Cats, Copyright and Clones."  Dr. Bowen provides very good explanations and descriptions regarding copyright infringement and plagiarism.  She also writes condensed, enlightening descriptions of what to do and what not to do to avoid the pitfalls of plagiarism.  Her copyright notice is even fun to read.  Links to other ideas on the topic are also provided."

As shown above, writing an introduction containing links is the right way to refer to another person's Web material; copying and pasting such information to your website without permission is not.

Copyright infringement is easy to avoid.  Learn more about it by visiting Caroline Bowen's web pages above, as well as the other authors listed below.
